The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Pekka Haavisto, held talks with a delegation of leaders from the Tasis Alliance and the Government of Peace and Unity. The meeting formed part of international efforts to end the conflict in Sudan and shape a path toward peace.
Political vision for peace
The alliance delegation was led by legal adviser Mohamed Al-Mukhtar, who is also a member of the negotiating delegation. During the meeting, the delegation presented a political vision aimed at ending hostilities and moving toward lasting peace.
Both sides placed the focus on an approach that goes beyond a ceasefire. The discussion centred on the historical roots of the Sudanese crisis and on building a state on new foundations of justice and citizenship.
International negotiation tracks
The meeting also reviewed earlier negotiation rounds involving the alliance and international partners. These included the first and second Jeddah tracks, the Geneva and Manama talks, and the latest round in Washington.
That diplomatic record points to continued cooperation between Sudanese forces and the international partners involved in efforts to reach a formula that can reduce human suffering and bring the conflict to an end.
Humanitarian access
The humanitarian file took a central place in the discussion. The meeting focused on ways to deliver humanitarian assistance to areas controlled by forces of the Tasis Government, estimated at around 70 percent of Sudan’s territory.
The talks also covered safe aid corridors for civilians and displaced people, the restoration of basic services in affected areas and urgent solutions for refugees in neighbouring countries. These issues remain central to any next step in the diplomatic process.
Cooperation with international partners
Legal adviser Mohamed Al-Mukhtar described the meeting as open and transparent. He considered it a basis for a new phase of joint work with the United Nations and international partners.
Pekka Haavisto’s involvement in these talks is seen within this diplomatic process as support for a peaceful settlement under international guidance. The meeting also sends a signal to European and international partners that diplomacy under United Nations auspices remains the key path to prevent further chaos in Sudan and to work toward rebuilding the state on democratic and fair standards.
